The American College of Rheumatology (ACR) has been selected as one of Atlanta’s top small workplaces for the second consecutive year. The ACR was the only medical association chosen by the Atlanta Journal Constitution as one of the 75 companies in the 2018 Top Workplaces small company division.

The ACR has a staff of 93 individuals and provides specialized education, support, and advocacy for more than 9600 rheumatologists and healthcare professionals worldwide. The company was nominated to participate in the 2018 Top Workplaces awards small company division, which is defined as having 149 or fewer employees. More than 2300 companies participated in the awards program, and more than 55,000 employees completed the survey to determine the Top Workplaces winners. Employees were also encouraged to provide open-ended feedback about their company.

“ACR employees are given the latitude to make decisions about their work in order to achieve the best possible outcome,” Mark Andrejeski, ACR Executive Vice President, told Rheumatology Advisor. “I try to run a results-oriented organization without the pressure of having to do things a certain way and focus on outcome, not process. This creates a flexible environment that I think ACR employees appreciate.”

When asked what they value most about working with the ACR, employees cited “work-life balance” and a “mission-driven vision.” The ACR also provides a competitive benefits package that includes health and dental insurance, a defined employer contribution retirement plan, long- and short-term disability, paid leave, and a flexible work schedule.

“While we’ve had different mission statements over the years, the ACR’s focus has always been on delivering world class service with a positive attitude to our members,” Andrejeski added. “This is an important year for us, because we plan to become more international in our endeavors. From education, membership, and becoming more data-driven in our decisions, the ACR will offer exciting new opportunities in these areas for our members.”

Employees of the ACR also noted that they feel empowered to try out new ideas, and that the staff always appreciate creativity and innovation.

“I think everyone who works here respects each other as individuals, and people feel like their views are welcomed and listened to,” Andrejeski stated. “I am fortunate to have the staff I do and try my best to create an environment where people look forward to coming to work. The word ‘family’ is probably overused in some of these situations, but at the ACR there really is a sense of support, caring and mutual respect.”
