Postoperative analgesia should be planned in advance.  When not clinically contraindicated, neuraxial anesthesia with delivery of local anesthetic can help reduce the amount of postoperative intravenous or oral opioid medication needed. This can help facilitate early ambulation following surgery as part of a comprehensive plan for deep vein thrombosis prophylaxis, as well as provide ample pain management to encourage effective pulmonary hygiene techniques (eg, incentive spirometry to prevent postoperative lung atelectasis).
