Feelings of stress, fatigue, and exhaustion – what is being described as “burnout” – have become a common occurrence among providers, including rheumatologists, with important implications in clinical practice. Various surveys and studies have reported a substantial prevalence of burnout (approximately 50%) among rheumatology providers.
Beth L. Jonas, MD, Reeves Foundation Distinguished Professor of Medicine and chief of the Division of Rheumatology, Allergy, and Immunology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), joins us on this episode to provide deeper insight on the issue of “burnout” from a clinical practice standpoint.

Beth L. Jonas, MD, is the Reeves Foundation Distinguished Professor of Medicine and chief of the Division of Rheumatology, Allergy, and Immunology at UNC.
A recipient of a 2015 Rheumatology Research Foundation (RRF) Clinician Scholar Educator Award, Dr Jonas has developed a novel curriculum in Rheumatology in the Foundation Phase at UNC. She is a clinician educator and has an active rheumatology practice, where she sees patients with a wide spectrum of inflammatory rheumatic disorders. She teaches rheumatology to medical students, residents, and fellows and is actively involved in curricular development to train both physicians and advance practice providers in rheumatology.
Dr Jonas currently serves on the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) Workforce Solutions Committee. She has previously served as the chair of the ACR Committee on Training and Workforce and has served as co-chair of the ACR In-Training Examination Taskforce. She has served on the board of the Rheumatology Research Foundation as well as the RRF Scientific Advisory Committee.
Dr Jonas is a founding member of the Carolinas Fellows Collaborative (CFC), a group of program directors from the Carolinas who work to enhance the education of their collective trainees. Dr Jonas was honored as the ACR Distinguished Rheumatology Program Director in 2015.
